The Night Good Food and Great Friends Made Me Put My Phone Down

More Than Just a Friend — A Baker as Well

It is quite the rare find in life to have a friend who cares not only about your mental well-being, but your stomach as well. After all, being mentally okay is highly dependent on whether your stomach will permit it. An empty stomach has a way of sending very urgent signals to the brain that all other aspects of life will simply have to wait until all possibilities of hunger have been vanquished.

So when a friend of mine—who also happens to be quite the baker—showed up with an assortment of homemade treats, I certainly was not going to turn down such a thoughtful gesture. Some opportunities in life require careful consideration. Free baked goods from a good friend are not among them.

I happily accepted my little collection of baked treats before we settled into something equally satisfying: conversation. No elaborate entertainment was needed. Just food, company and the opportunity to talk about the various twists, turns and occasional potholes that make up life.

Analog Nights Are Better With Company

You know when you keep buying the lotto but never quite hit the jackpot? You’re always short by several numbers—or sometimes painfully close.

Well, who would have thought that I would win the friendship lotto with only two lucky numbers?

Some friendships seem to form so naturally that it feels as though God has reviewed all your previous questionable choices in friends, decided you clearly need help, and stepped in personally. In my case, those two lucky numbers came in the form of my baker friend and his wife.

Both have become great emotional supports and trusted confidants. They don’t simply talk about friendship—they live it through their time, advice and genuine guidance.

That is also what makes an analog night so valuable. Put the scrolling aside, forget the notifications for a while, sit with people you trust and actually talk. Sometimes those conversations help you find the mental peace that has been difficult to reach. Other times, they encourage you to reach for the financial high-hanging apples on life’s tree—the ones you may have spent years believing you were never tall enough or big enough to pick and enjoy.

Overall, Life Is Better With True Friends

It goes without saying that life is better with true friends. As much as some of us may wish otherwise, no one can go through life entirely alone.

Too much isolation can give a voice to a certain darkness—the kind that tells you life is only about existing, with no expectations, dreams, vision or laughter.

But the right people can interrupt that silence.

With true friends beside you, dreams can be shared and nurtured, visions can broaden like the most beautiful sunrise, and laughter can become a little musical symphony capable of calming inner storms.

Maybe that is why those baked treats meant more than simply having something delicious to eat. They represented care, companionship and the reminder that sometimes life’s sweetest gifts are not what someone places in your hands, but the people who choose to sit beside you while you enjoy them.

Who Makes Life a Little Sweeter?

Good food satisfies the stomach, but good company feeds something deeper. Share something delicious with people who matter, put the phone down for a while and enjoy the moment. Do you have anyone in your life who makes shared experiences sweeter?
