I Went Into the Woods to Disconnect—and Came Back Seeing Life Differently

Communing with Nature

How does one even commune with the woods? I promise you that I’m not crazy, but nature does talk to us if we are willing enough to listen; and I’m not just another tree-hugging fanatic—but unlike people, trees are harmless, so being a tree hugger wouldn’t be too bad. Now, as a child who grew up on the tropical isle of Jamaica, I developed this inclination for sneaking out of the house whenever no one was looking while visiting the country during summer vacations. You could say I was the Jamaican version of Little Red Riding Hood, but thankfully there was no big bad wolf—we do, however, have mosquitoes that are just as harmful, and I always seemed to be the main course.

Still, that didn’t stop me from listening to the calls of the rivers, trees and streams, as they were my only solace when adults just could not understand any of my many childhood woes—like losing my most prized Pokémon card, being subjected to spreading my bed, or, God forbid, picking up after myself. Nature, however, was always on my side, and so I was only partially to blame when I heard the wind giving voice to the swaying trees, telling me it was safe to sneak away when no one was watching.

What Language Does Nature Speaks?

Now that you have learnt how it all started, naturally, my love of nature stayed with me into adulthood. There is just something about disconnecting from the vice of modern technology to learn the linguistics of the wild, which, in sweet serenading hums, creaks and whistles, speaks to your soul in a way humans could never articulate. I have always found it to be such a kind gesture when my day is going horribly badly and, without any coercion or payment, the birds sing me songs while I tour the art gallery of the sky. Therefore, I respond to nature in kind by not acting like a stranger who can only visit on monetized trips that exploit its beauty.

The language that nature speaks is different from that of man, whose words must sometimes be dissected to find truth or trust. When birds sing to you, their songs are true. When rivers hum to you, their voices are sincere. And when the orange sunset kisses you goodbye and promises to see you again tomorrow, it always keeps its word.

Your Peace of Mind Is a Call Away From Nature?

Don’t just take my word for it. Step away from the noise and worries of life and try surrendering yourself to the solace of nature. Let it soothe the aches and worries that are probably buried so deeply within you that only the peace of nature can uproot them.

Could Nature Be Calling You?

Step away from the screens and noise for a while and let nature do the talking. Take a walk, watch the sunset, or simply sit beneath a tree and listen—you might be surprised by what it has to say.
