From Packaging to Purpose: My Cardboard Reuse Hacks

Before You Throw It Away

I have developed a habit of looking at packaging and asking one simple question before throwing it away: Can I use this for something else? Sometimes the answer is absolutely not. Other times, what looks like disposable cardboard earns itself a promotion around the house.

That is exactly what happened with a large cardboard tray I had sitting around. Instead of sending it straight to the bin, I realized its individual compartments were perfect for organizing my seasoning packets.

Suddenly, packets that once competed for space on the shelf had their own little neighbourhood. Nothing fancy, nothing expensive—just a piece of cardboard doing far more work than it was originally hired for.

Amazon Packaging Earned a Second Job

Then came the chunky molded-cardboard inserts from some of my Amazon purchases. Most people would probably see protective packaging. I saw potential office equipment.

My portable-monitor setup needed extra height because the cooling pad raised my laptop enough to partially block the upper screen. Rather than immediately buying another accessory, I experimented with the cardboard inserts.

They were sturdy, wide enough to support the monitors and, most importantly, already paid for.

A few adjustments later, my Amazon packaging had officially become monitor risers. It may not have been their intended career path, but they adapted remarkably well.

Make Your Tiny Office Space Your Own

These little hacks reminded me that organization does not always require buying another container, shelf or gadget. Sometimes it just requires looking at what you already have differently.

Reusing packaging also fits nicely into the slower, more intentional side of living that I have come to appreciate. Before replacing, buying or discarding something, there is value in asking whether it still has another purpose left in it.

My seasoning tray and monitor risers certainly are not glamorous inventions, but they work—and there is something satisfying about turning something disposable into something genuinely useful.

What Have You Repurposed?

Before tossing that next piece of packaging, give it a second look. Have you ever turned something that was meant for the bin into a surprisingly useful household hack?
