How I Cleaned My Toilet Supply Hose With This Simple Hack

The Grime I Thought Was Part of the Hose

As I continued working my way through the bathroom for this Home Hacks series, my attention eventually landed on the plastic toilet supply hose.

It had developed dark grey and black-looking spots along the outside, and some areas were so dirty that the original white crosshatch pattern underneath was difficult to see. I had looked at it so many times that I was beginning to accept that this was simply what the hose looked like now.

Apparently, I had been giving the grime far too much credit.

I still had some of the Dawn Powerwash and warm water solution left over from cleaning the bathroom sink, so rather than throw it away, I decided to see whether it had another cleaning job left in it.

My Dawn Powerwash Toilet Supply Hose Cleaning Method

What You’ll Need:

  • Dawn Powerwash
  • Warm water
  • A sponge
  • Cleaning gloves
  • Plain water for the final wipe-down

Step 1 — Make the Cleaning Solution

Put on your cleaning gloves, then mix some Dawn Powerwash with warm water to create a simple cleaning solution.

Dip your sponge into the solution and start cleaning the outside of the plastic toilet supply hose.

Step 2 — Clean the Hose a Section at a Time

Work your way along the hose one section at a time, gently scrubbing the outside of the plastic with the sponge.

Because this is a flexible plastic hose, avoid using anything harsh. Give the darker grey and black-looking areas some extra attention and watch to see whether the buildup starts moving.

And it should.

Step 3 — Keep Going Until the Original Pattern Reappears

Continue cleaning until the white crosshatch pattern underneath starts becoming visible again.

That will help you see whether what looked like permanent discoloration was actually grime sitting on the surface.

Step 4 — Wipe It Down With Plain Water

Once you have worked your way along the hose, wipe away the remaining cleaning solution with plain water.

Then step back and check the result.

Apparently, My Toilet Hose Was Still White

This one surprised me.

The dark buildup that had been covering the hose came away, and the original white pattern underneath was clearly visible again. The difference between where I started and where I finished was much bigger than I expected from such a simple cleaning method.

What made it even better was that I had not mixed anything new for this experiment. I was simply getting another use out of the same Dawn Powerwash and warm water solution that had already helped me clean the bathroom sink.

That leftover solution definitely earned its keep.

The hose did not need replacing, and I did not need a stronger cleaner. It just needed a proper cleaning to remind me what it was supposed to look like.

Another small bathroom problem officially crossed off the list.

Could Your Toilet Hose Use a Proper Clean?

If your plastic toilet supply hose is looking older and dirtier than it should, it may be worth seeing how much of that discoloration is really just surface grime. Mine looked far past its best, but a little leftover cleaning solution brought the white pattern right back.
