How I Turned an Empty Egg Tray Into This Surprisingly Useful Kitchen Hack

From Egg Tray to Kitchen Organizer

I had an empty cardboard egg tray sitting around, and instead of throwing it away, I decided to see whether it could earn itself another job.

At first, I used it to organize some of the small packets that always seem to disappear into cupboards—seasonings, soup mixes, teas and other little kitchen items that somehow become impossible to find the moment you actually need them.

Then I realized the tray could handle more than packets.

I started using the front compartments for vegetables too, including onions, garlic, peppers and a tomato. Suddenly, an old egg tray had gone from packaging to a surprisingly useful little kitchen organizer.

Not bad for something that was headed for the bin.

How I Used the Cardboard Tray

What You’ll Need:

  • A clean, dry cardboard egg tray
  • Small condiment or seasoning packets
  • Dry vegetables such as onions, garlic and peppers
  • A clean, dry place to keep the tray

Step 1 — Clean Out the Tray

Make sure the cardboard tray is clean, dry and free of any broken egg residue before reusing it.

If the tray is stained, damp or dirty, use a different one.

Step 2 — Arrange the Packets

Place your smaller seasoning packets, soup mixes, teas or other lightweight kitchen items toward the back of the tray.

The individual compartments help keep everything standing upright instead of disappearing into one big pile.

Step 3 — Add the Vegetables

Use the front compartments for dry vegetables that fit comfortably inside the tray.

I used mine for onions, garlic, peppers and a tomato, which gave me an easy way to keep some of the things I reach for regularly together.

Step 4 — Keep It Somewhere Dry

Place the tray somewhere clean and dry where the cardboard will not get wet.

That is basically the whole hack.

No cutting. No glue. No DIY project that somehow requires six tools and a trip back to the store.

Just reuse what you already have.

Did It Actually Work?

For me, yes.

The biggest advantage was simply having everything visible. Instead of digging through packets or having smaller vegetables rolling around wherever they felt like going, the tray gave everything its own little section.

It also made me look at the cardboard tray differently. Something that normally gets tossed out immediately turned into an organizer I could keep using until the cardboard finally decided it had done enough.

And apparently, mine was not ready for retirement yet.

One quick note: because this is cardboard, I would only use it with clean, dry items and replace it once it becomes damp, stained or worn.

Would You Reuse It?

Would you turn an old egg tray into a kitchen organizer—or is yours still going straight to the bin?
