How I Freshened My Bathroom With This Must-Try Toilet Tank Hack

The Toilet Tank Hack I Had to Try

By this point in my bathroom Home Hacks experiments, I had already dealt with rust, grime and mineral buildup, so naturally I was curious when I came across another ridiculously simple idea: pouring Tide liquid detergent into the toilet tank.

The concept almost sounded too easy. Add the detergent to the tank, flush the toilet and let the scented water do its thing.

There was no scrubbing involved. No waiting around with a timer. No mixture to prepare.

So, of course, I tried it.

What I was mainly interested in was the smell. I wanted to know whether adding detergent to the tank would actually make any noticeable difference after flushing—or whether this was going to be another internet hack that sounded much more impressive than it really was.

It did not take long to get my answer.

My Tide Toilet Tank Freshening Method

What You’ll Need:

  • Tide liquid laundry detergent
  • Your toilet tank
  • A toilet that was suddenly getting flushed far more often than necessary

Step 1 — Remove the Tank Lid

Carefully remove the lid from the toilet tank so you can access the water inside.

Step 2 — Add the Tide

Pour some Tide liquid detergent directly into the tank water. There is no mixture to prepare and nothing else needs to be added.

Step 3 — Replace the Lid and Flush

Put the tank lid back in place and flush the toilet normally.

That was it.

The detergent mixed with the tank water and travelled through the toilet during the flush. The difference I was testing for was not something I had to stare at and wonder about either—I could smell it almost immediately.

And apparently I liked the result enough to flush it again.

Not because the toilet needed another flush.

I just wanted to smell it again.

My Bathroom Suddenly Smelled Brand New

I loved this one.

After flushing, the bathroom had this wonderfully fresh scent that genuinely made the whole space feel different. The easiest way I can describe it is that the bathroom suddenly smelled brand new.

And thankfully, the fragrance was not overpowering.

That was probably my favorite part. I did not walk into the bathroom and feel as though somebody had emptied an entire bottle of perfume into it. Instead, there was just the right amount of fragrance lingering in the air after each flush.

It reminded me of spring—clean, fresh and pleasant without becoming too much.

Apparently, I enjoyed it enough to start wasting perfectly good flushes in the name of scientific curiosity.

One flush became another because I genuinely could not believe how much I liked the result.

Of all the bathroom experiments I have tried so far, this might be one of the easiest to appreciate immediately. There was no standing around wondering whether something had changed. You could smell the difference.

And unlike some hacks that I test once simply to find out whether they work, this one earned a completely different reaction:

I want to keep using it.

This one is definitely a keeper for me.

A Quick Note: This was my personal experiment using Tide in my own toilet tank. Laundry detergent is not specifically made as a toilet-tank treatment, so I would still recommend checking the guidance for your toilet and its internal components before deciding whether to make this a regular habit.
