Breaking the “Real Men Don’t Wear Pink” Rule
Somewhere along the way, pink became one of those colours men were apparently supposed to approach with caution. I never really got the memo—or perhaps I simply chose to ignore it. Fashion, for me, has always been about wearing what makes me feel good rather than dressing for the approval of everybody else.
So when dress-down day came around at work, I had no problem showing up in pink. The Men in Black may have built an entire franchise around looking cool in dark suits and sunglasses, but on this particular day I was representing the lesser-known division: Men in Pink. No aliens to chase, no memory-erasing device in my pocket—just a comfortable outfit and absolutely no intention of apologizing for the colour.
A Little Cherry-Blossom Tranquility
My appreciation for pink goes beyond simply wanting to challenge a stereotype. I have always loved the softness and tranquility of the colour, and one of my favourite inspirations comes from cherry blossoms. There is something beautiful about how their delicate pink tones can feel peaceful without being dull–their calm tranquility just catches the eyes of the soul.
That is exactly what I like about this shirt. It is soft, relaxed and easy on the eyes, which made it perfect for a dress-down day while still feeling intentional. Wearing pink does not make me feel less masculine; if anything, being comfortable enough to wear a colour simply because I enjoy it feels like its own kind of confidence. I dress for myself first; without any consideration for the validation of onlookers.
When the Details Bring It All Together
Of course, even on dress-down day, I wasn’t about to just throw on a pink shirt and call the job finished. The black detailing along the upper sleeves gave me the perfect excuse to pair it with my black Dockers pants, carrying that darker tone through the outfit and giving the softer pink some structure. Then came one of those little details I love adding: a black necklace with a soft iridescent green crystal, introducing just enough contrast and intrigue without competing with everything else.
The pink brought the tranquility, the black grounded the look, and that subtle touch of green gave it something unexpected. The result felt casual without looking careless—proof that changing up your swag does not always require dressing up. Sometimes all it takes is the right colour, a few thoughtful details and enough confidence to walk into work looking like the Men in Black franchise finally discovered pastels.
