A Desk I Was Never Going to Replace
Welcome to My Small Desk, Big Ideas Setup Series
This series follows how I transformed a desk my late father built—and one I wanted to preserve—into a much more functional home-office setup, using removable accessories and a little resourcefulness instead of hacking away at this cherished memory. Keep reading to explore the series.
This desk means far more to me than simply having somewhere to sit and work. My late father built it with love and passion, and because of that, it is something I treasure deeply. If I could take it everywhere with me, I probably would. That is how much it means to me.
So when my tiny home office started feeling increasingly crowded, replacing the desk was never really an option. Drilling into it, cutting pieces away or making permanent modifications just to create more room was also out of the question. I knew I would regret unnecessarily changing something my father had built with his own hands.
That left me with one challenge: how could I make this small desk work much harder without permanently changing it?
Finding Smarter Ways to Create More Space
The answer eventually became clamp-on accessories and other removable additions. Instead of trying to make the desk physically bigger, I started looking for ways to use the space around it more efficiently.
There was quite a bit of shopping, comparing and process of elimination along the way. I had to think about what would actually fit, what I would genuinely use and, of course, what made sense spending-wise. Some ideas looked useful at first but did not make sense for this particular desk, while others solved problems almost immediately.
The clamp-on accessories turned out to be some of the smartest choices. They allowed me to use the edges and sides of the desk for extra storage and working space while leaving the desk itself largely untouched. More importantly, I could remove them later without looking back at holes, cuts or other permanent changes.
From an Empty Desk to My Tiny Home Office Setup
Before the monitors, holders, storage pieces and all the other additions came into the picture, this was where everything started: one cherished wooden desk and a lot of empty space waiting to be figured out.
What started as a space problem eventually became a collection of small home-office hacks that allowed me to keep the desk I love while making it far more practical for the way I work today.
Let me walk you through the process of transforming this simple empty desk into something that, to me, feels almost miraculous.
