When Your Office Space Feels Smaller Than Your Ambitions
Working with a tiny space can be frustrating. Sometimes it feels as though you are trying to fit an elephant and a giraffe into your bedroom—and I am simply not about the zookeeping lifestyle. I experienced that frustration while trying to figure out how I was going to somehow expand my work desk to create a comfortable home-office setup without sacrificing what little room I had.
Naturally, I ran to Amazon for rescue, hunting down portable and space-saving equipment that could give me the workstation I wanted. Unfortunately, Amazon rescued my office while simultaneously holding my pockets hostage. Between the equipment and shipping costs, my blood pressure experienced some expansion of its own. Still, it was for a worthy cause, so I fought the good fight and emerged slightly penniless—but happy. And no, I do not have a compulsive buying disorder. Perhaps in a previous life, but I have been fully rehabilitated.
I should also mention that I took the opportunity to upgrade my laptop, since the old one was already well into the afterlife with no signs of resurrection. That was really what made the setup feel expensive; most of the other accessories were reasonably priced for the value they offered.
My Little Garden of Eden
As a coder, content creator and proud nerd, my workspace is my little Garden of Eden—a place where I breathe life into ideas and send them out into the world. Naturally, it also doubles as my royal throne room, where I reign over a collection of carefully chosen Amazon subjects.
To maximize the desk, I added clamp-on accessories wherever possible: a two-storey storage tray, keyboard-and-mouse tray, triple portable monitor for some super-powered quad-screen visual prowess, and a ring light that also helps me reduce my reliance on the room light. Then there is my trusty clamp-on beverage holder with phone slots and space for my laptop bag. Yes, it was necessary. Typing is practically manual labour, and hardworking creators require frequent rejuvenation.
There was one miscalculation: my cooling pad raised the laptop high enough to block almost half of the upper monitor. Having spent far too much to surrender, I improvised with sturdy cardboard trays and the laptop box to elevate the screens. Problem solved—and my Amazon spending spree was saved from ending in disappointment.
Make Your Tiny Office Space Your Own
The moral of the story is not that I love spending—or that spending money automatically solves everything. It is that carefully investing in the right equipment can completely transform a small living space. My setup has made working and relaxing much more comfortable while fitting neatly into my current bachelor lifestyle.
You do not need a huge room or a perfectly designed office to create a workspace that works for you. Sometimes all it takes is a little planning, a few smart accessories and enough creativity to look at a cardboard box and think, Yes… that is now office furniture.
Work with what you have, solve the problems as they appear and make that tiny space your own.
