Tracy Chapman’s “Fast Car”: The Song That Made Escape Feel Possible

Music as My Escape

We all have different reasons for listening to music: to feel understood, to feel loved, to relax or simply to lose ourselves in the melodies and beats. Somehow, all of these reasons connect to one common theme—escapism. Through music, I discovered my mutant-like ability to live vicariously through the experiences and musings of artists. After all, I was never going to be granted the ability to fly—escaping to some distant place where paying bills is only a myth—or to read minds, instantly identifying every Oscar-worthy pretender I’ve ever met.

Therefore, I had to settle for something more feasible. Listening to music and building entire worlds from lyrics and melodies became my superpower—one that no one could ever take away from me or strip from my reality. That is how I came to fall so deeply in love with Tracy Chapman’s “Fast Car”, a song that has often helped me escape into the hope of a happier reality.

How Tracy Chapman’s “Fast Car” Became My Vehicle of Escape

I grew up in rather humble circumstances. But before your minds begin to wander off—no, I didn’t have to fight the dog for its bone, and open windows at night with the moon shining through were not how I was supplied practical lighting.

What I have learnt in life, however, is that somewhere, someone is carrying circumstances that, to them, feel like the weight of an entire mountain. So, when my own shoulders begin to quiver beneath the weight of my mountain, I turn on Tracy Chapman’s “Fast Car”, and strangely enough, the load begins to feel a little lighter.

I imagine my fast car taking me away into the dreams and hopes of a better life—the same hopes I carried as a child, a teenager and later an adult, desperately searching for an escape from the rural limitations of my once-upon-a-time existence. Yes, undoubtedly, a lot has changed, and life has become far better now. But one thing remains the same. Whenever new mountains begin to weigh me down, I play Tracy Chapman’s “Fast Car” and allow the music to lighten the load.
