Traveler: A Poem About Life, Death and the Mystery Beyond

Why Would I Even Write About the Afterlife?

I have always been a deep thinker. Even as a child, I would question why I have 10 toes instead of 13, or why God did not create me with the ability to fly so I could escape my chores that piled up on me like bad debt. O, how I envied the birds whenever they did not find themselves caught and singing of freedom from tiny cages.

But as I grew older, my thought processes became more complex, and I accidentally discovered that I have somewhat of a penchant for writing and playing with words. One day, my hand stumbled onto a pen and my pen then stumbled onto blank pages; and lo and behold—words began to take shape, forming worlds within the playpen of my mind. Within these worlds, I sometimes find myself wondering about life beyond the grave, thinking about whether we will feel like caged birds whose souls have finally escaped the confines of the body.

And that is how I came to pen this accidental poem, “Traveler.”

Writing Makes Everything More Beautiful—Even the Grave?

Undoubtedly, the afterlife is not a very happy thought to dwell on. Who wants to think about not waking up to the sound of their alarm and happily getting up for their regular 9-to-5 job? Or watching pampered Instagram videos of poodles living more luxurious lives than you? But seriously, writing has always been my getaway—something I indulge in for hours and run to when I am gripped by complex emotions that only the therapy of pen and paper can soothe.

Therefore, putting my ruminations about the afterlife to paper took on a different form than I expected. To my surprise, I felt pacified as I pondered it as just another journey. And, in the wise words of Bilbo Baggins, “I think I am quite ready for another adventure”—that is of course, only when my sun is ready to set and the grey shores call me home.

So, Enjoy Your Now and Collect Your Moments!

These thoughts naturally gave me a different outlook on life—one not muddied by getting early grey hairs from worrying about the unknown, but instead persuaded to live life to the fullest and collect every precious moment like jewels safely tucked away in the treasure chest of my heart.

Could Today Be One of the Moments You Collect?

Life is a journey, and none of us knows exactly where it leads. So enjoy your now, collect the moments that matter, and tuck them away like little jewels in the treasure chest of your heart.
