Why I Ditched Traditional Cabinets for Open Shelves

Bachelor Organization—It Doesn’t Have to Be Fancy to Work

Gone are the days when my mom used to ring a bell and bring me food spread out on a platter, or when my sister used to ask me what I wanted for dinner just to ensure that, in Mom’s absence, baby brother was well fed and taken care of—even though I’m as thin as a stick. Which is not my fault. Food just vanishes from my body like thin air once consumed.

But now, happy days! Hurray! I’m a bachelor living on his own—or so I thought. No one tells you just how difficult it is to get your home décor right when there’s no mommy, sister, girlfriend or guardian angel to help you. So, I’ve figured out a thing or two along the way, and open shelves are one of them. And yes, you are not mistaken. That is my trusty egg tray, proudly displayed for all to see, and I store my condiments in it for easy access. Because, for me, practicality matters—whatever way, shape or size it comes in.

If I Can See It, I Remember I Bought It

For those who have ever felt lost opening multiple cabinet doors and going down a rabbit hole just to see—or remember—the groceries you’ve bought, this post is for you. When I say I love simplicity, I really do mean it in the simplest sense of the word.

After a hectic workday, who wants to do additional labour hunting for groceries inside their very own cabinets? Therefore, I’ve had absolutely no regrets about ditching traditional cabinets for open shelves. At a glance, I can quickly see what I’ve bought and exactly what I need to prepare my next quick Marry Me Dish. And yes, I won’t be a bachelor forever! Single life has fully awakened my inner chef, and one day, some fair maiden will taste one of my delicious creations and propose to me on the spot. Then I’ll finally have someone to pamper me the way my mom and sister used to. Oh yes, I’ll love and cherish that special someone as well. How could I not? After all, the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach.

Everything Has a Place—And It’s Within Reach

It is my firm belief that cooking should not be a treasure hunt for your breakfast, lunch or dinner items. Everything in life has its place. Fish live in the sea, birds inhabit the air, and for me and my current bachelor lifestyle, my groceries belong on open shelves—where everything is fully exposed and easy to find.

Could Open Shelves Make Your Life Easier?

Sometimes good organization isn’t about hiding everything away—Keep what you need where you can see it. Give open shelving a try and make it work for your space, even if an egg carton somehow becomes part of the décor.
